What is a good typing speed?
A useful typing speed lets you express your thoughts comfortably and accurately. Your best comparison is your own earlier result on a similar task, rather than someone else's score.
Build control before speed
If you are still searching for keys, start with F and J and build a reliable home position. If you know the keyboard but make frequent mistakes, slow down and practice the combinations that interrupt your rhythm.
Compare like with like
A lowercase word list, a passage with punctuation, and a boss battle make different demands. Use the same 60-second typing test periodically and record both WPM and accuracy. A lower score on harder text does not necessarily mean you have lost progress.
Choose one goal for your next session
- Find the home row without looking down.
- Finish a familiar passage with fewer errors.
- Keep a steady rhythm through capitals and punctuation.
- Increase speed gradually while preserving accuracy.
Practice more often than you test
Use short, focused sessions to build the movements. An occasional test helps you see what changed; repeatedly chasing a score can distract from the keys that need practice.
