The home row is the resting position for touch typing. Each finger has a home key, and your hands return here after reaching to other rows.

Left-hand home row

Place your left pinky on A, ring finger on S, middle finger on D, and index finger on F.

Right-hand home row

Place your right index finger on J, middle finger on K, ring finger on L, and pinky on semicolon. Your thumbs rest lightly near the space bar.

Why returning matters

Touch typing becomes easier when every reach has a known starting and ending point. After pressing another key, bring the finger back to its home-row position instead of letting the whole hand drift.
